In Jodhpur, the festival of colours starts on the eve of Holi, which is scheduled for Sunday March 12, 2017. On this festival in Jodhpur, Holika’s smoldering to ashes is re-enacted to celebrate the triumph of “good” over ‘evil’.  Each area square in Jodhpur assembles a blaze loaded with blooms, coconut, and grains from the new harvest. This Holi, the state tourism department of Jodhpur has geared up to facilitate and cater to the domestic as well as foreign tourists. Vibrant colours- gulal and abeer will fill the air and people will enjoy pouring coloured water over each other. Children will have special delight in spraying colours on one another with their water guns and throwing water balloons on passersby. Some enthusiastic women and men of the town will form groups called tolis and move in colonies – applying colours and exchanging greetings. Songs, dance on the drums and mouth-watering Holi delicacies will display a vibrant shade of Blue City on Holi. Youngsters too would apply colours on their beloved and crushes. This has a popular legend behind it. It is said that the naughty and mischievous Lord Krishna started the trend of playing colours. He applied colour on his beloved Radha to make her one like him. The romantic trend soon gained popularity among the masses.

Khichan- a remote village in Jodhpur that welcomes thousands of Demoiselle cranes for Bird Watchers!

Rajasthan apart from being a destination of magnificent forts and palaces, from a couple of years has become a prominent tourist destination for nature enthusiasts. Moreover, the state has turned into a bird lovers’ paradise after the renovation of  prime lakes and ponds. Given the spurt in the number of migratory birds at various locations this year, not just ornithologists, even ordinary birdwatchers and environmentalists are upbeat and are looking forward to the state being harnessed as a destination for bird lovers.

Birds in Jodhpur

Every winter Jodhpur attracts thousands of migratory birds from foreign lands, demoiselle cranes being vast in number. Khichan, a village in Phalodi tehsil of Jodhpur is known for a large number of demoiselle cranes that visit this remote area of Jodhpur every winter. This annual bird migration began with around a hundred cranes in the 1970s, when a local couple started feeding pigeons. Other villagers joined their efforts, and as of 2014, Khichan hosted over 30,000 demoiselle cranes from as early as August each year to as late as March of the following year.

Last year in January they made a record by crossing the count of 80 thousand demoiselle cranes making the Khichan village of Jodhpur a prime destination for birdwatchers!

The Blue City- Jodhpur’s International Kite Festival

Jodhpur’s  International kite festival was initiated by Rajasthan tourism department only a couple of years ago. But in such a short span of time, it has become very popular among locals and tourists. In the Jodhpur International Desert Kite festival, the most skilled kite flyers from India as well as cross borders take part in the competition to showoff their kite flying skills. A lot of excitement surrounds this festival.

The date of the festival coincides with Makar Sankranti on 14 January, and continues for three days. The venue is Jodhpur’s polo grounds, and for the duration of the festival, the skies above are filled with unique and colourful kites launched by local schoolchildren, released by the Air Force, and set aloft by participants in the contests. Contestants work hard to keep their kites aloft and also to disable their opponents’ kites. During the kite festival in Jodhpur, the sky gets filled up with kites of various colors and shapes. There is a huge enthusiasm among the people for this festival. The occasional uproar of the crowds on the snapping of the chords of others’ kites makes this day a cherished one for the people of Jodhpur.

“The view from the Narlai hill is spectacular”– This is the comment that is often heard when the guests who stay at Rawla Narlai choose to climb the Narlai hill. The statue of the white elephant on the summit of the Narlai hill offers a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside and the village below. A guided climb of over 700 steps to the summit of this hill gives a spectacular view of sunrise or sunset. Watch the glorious sunrise or sunset while sipping hot tea and you will feel completely charged and invigorated.

For those who would like to explore this splendid countryside on foot, Rawla Narlai has a few routes that you can choose from which last not more that few hours. Our guide who is well versed with this area takes you around the rocky terrain where you can enjoy a picnic in the open countryside. Feel the silence around you and return back to the hotel with beautiful scenic photos that you will be bound to click.

The rugged Godwad countryside around Narlai suits the leopards and over a period the number has increased. Experience the thrill of customized ride on our jeeps for a sighting of this beautiful and graceful cat. Not easy to spot as they blend very well into the background, these cats can sometimes be seen sunning themselves on the rocks or resting under the shade of a tree. Unlike the lions, leopards do not stay in a pride and are solitary by nature and have large territories that they roam in. But sometimes they can be spotted in pairs. It is a very exciting activity that Rawla Narlai offers.

Over 100 steps into the Narlai hill takes you to a temple inside this hill which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is said that the great Indian Sage Shri Narad meditated here to please Lord Shiva and that’s how the village got its name. Later at some point in time the devotees constructed this temple. Simple yet beautiful this temple is worth a visit. The silence and beauty of this temple will captivate you.

Rajasthan stark and sensuous, beckons you to its Aravalli hills, where the sheer magic of Rawla Narlai will mesmerize you!  Visit www.rawlanarlai.com
