When a weekend coincides with festival, traveling enthusiasts get ready to head out of their town towards a new undiscovered territory. Holi this year too has come with a long weekend and many travelers have booked their itineraries in advance to indulge and soak in the spirit of colours and choosing traditional Holi destinations to enthrall in hues of vivid shades. Groups of foreign travelers have started pouring into the different parts of Rajasthan, especially in Jaipur and Jodhpur!
In Jodhpur, the festival of colours starts on the eve of Holi, which is scheduled for Sunday March 12, 2017. On this festival in Jodhpur, Holika’s smoldering to ashes is re-enacted to celebrate the triumph of “good” over ‘evil’. Each area square in Jodhpur assembles a blaze loaded with blooms, coconut, and grains from the new harvest. The following morning which will fall on Monday 13th March, 2017, the principle day of playing with colours, the streets will be loaded with individuals tossing colored powder at one another to wish each other a blissful and blessed Holi.
This Holi, the state tourism department of Jodhpur has geared up to facilitate and cater to the domestic as well as foreign tourists. Vibrant colours- gulal and abeer will fill the air and people will enjoy pouring coloured water over each other. Children will have special delight in spraying colours on one another with their water guns and throwing water balloons on passersby. Some enthusiastic women and men of the town will form groups called tolis and move in colonies – applying colours and exchanging greetings. Songs, dance on the drums and mouth-watering Holi delicacies will display a vibrant shade of Blue City on Holi. Youngsters too would apply colours on their beloved and crushes. This has a popular legend behind it. It is said that the naughty and mischievous Lord Krishna started the trend of playing colours. He applied colour on his beloved Radha to make her one like him. The romantic trend soon gained popularity among the masses.
People of all communities participate in this fervent and colouful festival and strengthen the secular fabric of the Blue City- Jodhpur!
