This Holi, the state tourism department of Jodhpur has geared up to facilitate and cater to the domestic as well as foreign tourists. Vibrant colours- gulal and abeer will fill the air and people will enjoy pouring coloured water over each other. Children will have special delight in spraying colours on one another with their water guns and throwing water balloons on passersby. Some enthusiastic women and men of the town will form groups called tolis and move in colonies – applying colours and exchanging greetings. Songs, dance on the drums and mouth-watering Holi delicacies will display a vibrant shade of Blue City on Holi. Youngsters too would apply colours on their beloved and crushes. This has a popular legend behind it. It is said that the naughty and mischievous Lord Krishna started the trend of playing colours. He applied colour on his beloved Radha to make her one like him. The romantic trend soon gained popularity among the masses.

Jodhpur’s  International kite festival was initiated by Rajasthan tourism department only a couple of years ago. But in such a short span of time, it has become very popular among locals and tourists. In the Jodhpur International Desert Kite festival, the most skilled kite flyers from India as well as cross borders take part in the competition to showoff their kite flying skills. A lot of excitement surrounds this festival.

The date of the festival coincides with Makar Sankranti on 14 January, and continues for three days. The venue is Jodhpur’s polo grounds, and for the duration of the festival, the skies above are filled with unique and colourful kites launched by local schoolchildren, released by the Air Force, and set aloft by participants in the contests. Contestants work hard to keep their kites aloft and also to disable their opponents’ kites. During the kite festival in Jodhpur, the sky gets filled up with kites of various colors and shapes. There is a huge enthusiasm among the people for this festival. The occasional uproar of the crowds on the snapping of the chords of others’ kites makes this day a cherished one for the people of Jodhpur.
