Khichan- a remote village in Jodhpur that welcomes thousands of Demoiselle cranes for Bird Watchers!

Rajasthan apart from being a destination of magnificent forts and palaces, from a couple of years has become a prominent tourist destination for nature enthusiasts. Moreover, the state has turned into a bird lovers’ paradise after the renovation of  prime lakes and ponds. Given the spurt in the number of migratory birds at various locations this year, not just ornithologists, even ordinary birdwatchers and environmentalists are upbeat and are looking forward to the state being harnessed as a destination for bird lovers.

Every winter Jodhpur attracts thousands of migratory birds from foreign lands, demoiselle cranes being vast in number. Khichan, a village in Phalodi tehsil of Jodhpur is known for a large number of demoiselle cranes that visit this remote area of Jodhpur every winter. This annual bird migration began with around a hundred cranes in the 1970s, when a local couple started feeding pigeons. Other villagers joined their efforts, and as of 2014, Khichan hosted over 30,000 demoiselle cranes from as early as August each year to as late as March of the following year.

Last year in January they made a record by crossing the count of 80 thousand demoiselle cranes making the Khichan village of Jodhpur a prime destination for birdwatchers!

The Blue City- Jodhpur’s International Kite Festival

Jodhpur’s  International kite festival was initiated by Rajasthan tourism department only a couple of years ago. But in such a short span of time, it has become very popular among locals and tourists. In the Jodhpur International Desert Kite festival, the most skilled kite flyers from India as well as cross borders take part in the competition to showoff their kite flying skills. A lot of excitement surrounds this festival.

The date of the festival coincides with Makar Sankranti on 14 January, and continues for three days. The venue is Jodhpur’s polo grounds, and for the duration of the festival, the skies above are filled with unique and colourful kites launched by local schoolchildren, released by the Air Force, and set aloft by participants in the contests. Contestants work hard to keep their kites aloft and also to disable their opponents’ kites. During the kite festival in Jodhpur, the sky gets filled up with kites of various colors and shapes. There is a huge enthusiasm among the people for this festival. The occasional uproar of the crowds on the snapping of the chords of others’ kites makes this day a cherished one for the people of Jodhpur.

Jodhpur Railway Station has been around since 1885 to be precise. Jodhpur RIFF- Best Time to Visit the Blue City!

Winter’s chilling breeze, brighter moon nights, and the songs of the desert!! On splendid chilling October evenings, when the sun is setting and the sky is filled with orange and reddish hues, you hear light music passing by your ears and the wind embracing your skin gently. This Desert Rock Park was developed in the year 2006, with the aim to restore the natural ecology of a large rocky wasteland area next to the Fort. The Park extends across 70 hectares of rehabilitated land and has a walking trail. It’s interesting to explore at different times of the year, as its foliage changes with the seasons.

A handsome section of the mighty Mehrangarh Fort, Jai Pol is a massive gateway, constructed as a victory memorial. It is one of the seven entrances of the impressive citadel that is set atop a hillock. Even today, some cannon ball scars formed during the battle can be seen around the Pol, which are testimony of Jodhpur’s gallant history.
